Puppy and Kitten Care
For many pet lovers, nothing more exciting and fun than getting a new puppy or kitten! The Martinsville Veterinary Hospital team is excited to be your partner in ensuring your new friend gets the best care possible. Our comprehensive puppy and kitten care ensures your new companion starts off on the right paw. The first few months of a young pet’s life are critical to their development, future health, and well-being, and we’re here to help every step of the way.
You should schedule your puppy or kitten to see the veterinarian as soon as possible after you adopt. Below is some information on what you can expect when you bring your new friend in for their puppy or kitten care visits.
Comprehensive Physical Exams
Is your puppy or kitten’s growth on track? Are there any signs of current or future health issues? How large will your pet get? Your Martinsville veterinarian can answer all these questions.
Special Offer!
Save $15 on each puppy or kitten wellness exam during the first 6 months following your pet’s initial visit! This discount applies to all follow-up wellness visits until around your pet’s spay/neuter time, with no limit on the number of visits. Start your new family member’s health journey right and save some money while you’re at it — because let’s face it, you’re going to want ALL the toys, treats, and outfits for your new little one.
Vaccinations
Like human babies, young pets’ immune systems are not fully developed. This means they’re more susceptible to disease and require extra protection during their first months. To be protected, puppies and kittens need a series of vaccinations given at monthly intervals.
- For puppies: Core vaccines include rabies (required by law) and the canine distemper/parvo series. Additional vaccines such as Lyme, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, and canine influenza may be recommended depending on your pup’s lifestyle and risk factors.
- For kittens: Core vaccines include rabies (required by law), and the FVRCP series. The FeLV vaccine may also be recommended depending on your cat’s lifestyle.
Intestinal Parasite Screenings
It’s common for puppies and kittens to have intestinal parasites, and they can be hard on a young pet’s system and make them quite sick. Some parasites can also infect your human family members, especially young children. Fecal testing for intestinal parasites is a must for young pets — both for their health and the health of your entire household. Should your puppy or kitten test positive for interstitial parasites, we’re ready to help.
Microchipping
One of the most important things you can do for your pet is to microchip them. Unlike collars, microchips stay with your pet for life, making it much more likely that your dog or cat will return to you if lost. The process is quick and simple and can be done at any time.
First Doses of Heartworm, Flea, & Tick Preventative
Fleas and ticks are unpleasant, carry disease, and can be detrimental to a young pet’s health. Heartworms can be deadly for both dogs and cats, and while treatment is available for dogs, no treatment is available for cats. We’ll make sure your puppy or kitten is protected with its first doses of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
Behavior & Nutrition Counseling
While it may be true that puppies and kittens don’t come with instructions, our veterinarians are here to answer all your questions and help set your pet up for success as a family member.
- For puppies: We provide guidance on the best housebreaking methods, socialization techniques, and basic training.
- For kittens: We offer advice on litterbox training, socialization, and other kitten basics.
For all young pets, we’ll advise you on feeding schedules and nutritional options for optimum health and growth.
